Age grading looks simple: a number on a box. But for plastic toys sold in the US or EU, it decides which safety tests apply, which warnings must appear, and whether retailers will even stock your product. At Shantou WeLoveToys Co., Ltd. (WELOVETOY), we’ve seen good toys fail because the age label was wrong. Here’s how we help buyers get it right.
Age grading starts before design, not after.
A toy for a 2-year-old must survive drop tests, small parts checks, and strict chemical limits. A toy for a 7-year-old can include smaller pieces and more complex functions. If you design first and assign an age later, you may need to change the mold, the material, or the packaging. We ask your target age group in the first conversation.

Different ages mean different tests.
For under-3 toys, the small parts cylinder is non-negotiable. Pull tests, torque tests, and drop tests are stricter. For older children, functional sharp edges and projectiles may matter. EN71, ASTM F963, and CPSIA all define age-specific requirements. We match your product to the right standard before sampling.
Labels must match the toy—and the market.
A “3+” label in Europe may need different warning text than in the US. Barcodes, CE/UKCA marks, and small parts warnings must all align. One wrong label can stop a shipment at customs or trigger a retailer return. We review artwork against your destination market before printing.

WELOVETOY’s approach: test early, revise early.
We sample with the intended age group in mind. If a part fails the small parts test, we suggest a design change—not a label change. If a warning is missing, we catch it before mass production. Our team in Shantou works directly with mold makers and packaging suppliers, so changes happen fast.
Common mistake to avoid.
Some buyers copy an age label from a similar product without checking. That’s risky. Age grading is not marketing—it’s a safety statement. We help you choose an age that fits the toy’s real function, not just its look.

After five years serving US and EU buyers, we’ve learned that age grading is one of the easiest things to get wrong—and one of the most expensive. If you’re planning a plastic toy project, visit us at www.welovetoy.com. Tell us your target age and market. We’ll help you build a toy that’s safe, compliant, and ready to sell.
Let’s make toys that fit the age—and pass the test.
